I have been friends with Ryan for many years, I remember booking him for events where he would pitch up on his scooter, in the rain, with hair that reached his shoulders and a bag full of gear. Since then he has gone from Johannesburg to Cape Town and now resides in London. He is the first live performance artist I ever saw and the man that got me to fall in love with Minimal Techno when I heard is Galaxy FM mix. His unwavering dedication to his craft over the years is just inspiring.

Reflex Vol. 1 is a 4 track EP that has been produced and recorded live, Saytek type releases like this are not always so easy to do as their are so many elements that could go wrong and in some instances, happy mistakes could be made.

All 4 singles feature Ryans signature sound of a simple yet evolving groove, pulsing melodies and arpeggiated leads however the individual songs bring their own tone and features making each one unique. The EP has a hypnotic journey as you go from 1 song to the next but where it really comes to life is on track 3. Three Days Before is slightly more uptempo than the rest of the songs and stands out with its slapping clap which cuts through the other sounds, it is coupled with a thumping kick drum and well positioned percussive elements. These elements and its continuous evolution through the song will keep your foot tapping. It is then met with rising arpeggiation and topped with a haunting pan pipe or flute, I could not tell which it was. Have a listen and let me know. (Link Below)

Although these songs may not be the tracks you will hear on the main stage at the jol, I would definitely love to hear these at the after hours party. There is something about their monotony which seems to be like waves washing over your ear holes and cleansing the brain. I think what makes releases like this so special is that they will not be repeated, that is just the nature of playing live. So what you are hearing is pretty much a limited edition of one and I applaud Ryan in taking the step to release music in this way.
