Don’t just post to social media, post with intent!

Have you ever posted or seen a post that looks something like this on your social media? “Check out my new song http://www.youtube….” OR “I have just released my song, listen here: http://www.linkfire…”
DON’T do this, it doesn’t help anyone.

When posting to your social media profiles it is best to do it with purpose, have intension and give your post context. This will allow your posts to have weight and hook people into clicking your content and engage with you.

Here is a quick guide to help you increase your post engagement and get more out of your social media activity.

When planning your post, you should consider these…

Content: Content is what you are posting, the link to your music, a photo of you performing, an interview you are doing. All these are considered the ‘content’ of the post. You should always make sure the content is of high quality and represents your brand in a good light.
With the content you will also need to think of which platform or platforms are best suited for that content. For example, it is useless posting a link to Instagram as people can’t click on it in the post but it does work well on Facebook and Twitter where links are less restricted.

Context: Now consider what context you want to add to the post. “Listen to my latest single” is just not enough. Have you ever noticed how motivational posts, or posts about life changing events tend to gain more likes and shares? This is because they have great context to them, and people can relate.

For example, if you are posting about your new song, maybe try something like this…

EXAMPLE: My Amapiano single has just been release, this song was produced with my dear friend @James who helped me heal after a terrible break up. This song is for those who are also experiencing a breakup. Please listen here, subscribe to my channel, and enjoy! https://www.youtube….

From the above you can see that I have ticked the following boxes.

  • I have given the reader the genre of the song allowing people who are searching Amapiano to find my post and know that this is what they will hear.
  • The post also tags people in the song which will extend the reach of your post to people outside of your following.
  • I have added a relatable story to the post which others will connect with, this will give you a higher chance of then clicking on your link.
  • I have a clear call to action. Listen, Subscribe and Enjoy. A call to action guides the reader on what to do next.

Conversion: The conversion is all about the end goal of your post. You need to ask yourself, what is the purpose of this post? To gain subscribers/followers, to gain more listens or downloads, to get feedback? What do you want the people seeing this post to do?
In the example, I want people to listen to my song on YouTube and gain subscribers, so I have added that call to action. If I wanted feedback, I would have rather asked for comments and promised to reply to ALL the comments that people gave.

Repeat: After posting like this for a few days/weeks, it is always a good idea to go back on your posts and see which ones worked best according to the goal you set for each post.
Once you have reviewed that data you can then work your new posts around that to ensure that every post you do is hard hitting and gets the most traction that it can.
