South African dance music has a unique ability to bridge spiritual devotion and high-energy club culture without compromising either, and Gene Boi’s La Musica EP stands as a clear example of that balance.
Eugene Malete, known professionally as Gene Boi, has spent years honing his craft on live decks across Gauteng. A long-standing resident DJ for Red Square DJ Knockout since 2012, a resident for Belgravia Events, and the winner of the 2023 MTV Base Kasi Kasi Battle of the DJs, the Pretoria-based producer understands what moves a crowd. Drawing inspiration from heavyweights like Black Coffee, DJ Kent, DJ Cleo, DJ Clock, and DJ Shimza, his latest body of work expands on the foundation introduced by his lead single “Chant Dance”.
La Musica moves fluidly across 3-Step, Afro House, and classic House arrangements, placing emotion and resilience at the center of heavy electronic rhythms. Rather than treating these tracks as simple, disposable utility cuts for the weekend, Gene Boi approaches the EP as an intentional canvas for African storytelling and spiritual expression.
The centerpiece of the EP is “Tumelo”, a focus track whose title translates to “Faith”. Featuring gospel-infused vocal textures from Kayone Music and collaborative production work alongside NativeSon SA and Ksoulrsa, the track layers soulful vocal phrasing over a driving house foundation. It strikes a delicate balance, creating a record that feels just as suited for quiet reflection as it does for movement.
By weaving traditional storytelling and faith-driven vocal expressions with heavy rhythms and contemporary electronic production, Gene Boi delivers a project designed to move both the body and the spirit. La Musica is a confident step forward that cements his evolving vision within South Africa’s dance music landscape.
